A big plan for the allotment.

Well this weekend saw me doing something a little more constructive...(4th - 5th April). Last year I just planted stuff wherever I had room but this year I have all the land prepared so was able to planned...well kind of!! I didn't have any major plans but I did want to move my runner bean tent to the middle of the allotment where we had the dividing line and I also wanted to move
the raspberry canes and Gooseberry bush down there as well so I would always have that dividing line in place. It wasn't hard to move the raspberry canes and then I constructed a little fence for them to grow up aswell...I planted the gooseberry bush as a kind of center piece and put the bean canes the other side which now goes a continuous line down the middle of the allotment separating my half from Kate's so we always no where we are!!

The only other bit of planning I have done this year is to remember to plant those brassicas that won't be ready until next year at the end of the allotment as well so that I don't end up having to weed round huge patches of veg in the autumn and can get all the land rough dug evenly.

Another productive day on the allotment. :-)

Oh....I also potted my beetroot and peppers at home. I thought you had to put root vegetables straight in the ground but a friend told me she had started her's off in toilet roll tubes filled with compost. I though this was quite a good idea as you can protect your young plants in greenhouses but I don't have access to an abundance of toilet roll tubes like she does (she is a cleaner!!). Anyway one day when I was in 'Home Bargains' I found some peat pots, a packet of 70 was just £0.99 so I bought a load up (if you want to spot a bargain the best place to be is 'Home Bargains'!!) and this is what I have planted my beetroot in...hope it grows ok!!

  1. I've enjoyed reading your blog. You're a year in front of me, I got my allotment in March of this year. I'll pop by again to check on how you're getting on.
