Shopping Trip!!!

Well today I went out to Downtown Garden Center. I took my parents for lunch there as a treat and also had a good look round and picked up a few fruit bushes for the allotment.

I ended up with 2 redcurrant bushes....a blueberry bush and a red gooseberry bush...I even bought some lime for the blueberry bush :-).

Today's purchases.

I wasn't quite sure what to do with the lime as I have never added it to my soil before so I just dug a deep whole....sprinkled some in...stirred..watered....drained...re-stirred and then planted...I think this may have been wrong so I'm hoping I haven't done any damage...only time will tell!!!

I have planted all the fruit bushes within the gravel and also moved my existing gooseberry bush to the top end of the allotment as well. I think they will become very established here without hindering the plot...and it will look lovely in the su
mmer and make the fruits easily accessible!!

All planted!!

I also got some cut price herbs, all of them had gone down to 49p so they have gone in with the other herbs on the allotment...no real bargains this trip but I am happy that I got some fruit bushes...I would still like a few more but I am waiting for something that jumps out at me...loganberries are kind of doing that at the minute...hhmmm?!?!?!

  1. Lime makes the soil more alkaline and blueberries prefer an acid soil. I have my blueberries in containers and planted them in ericaceous compost. Also, blueberries fruit better if you have more than one plant. Sorry, this probably isn't the information you wanted to hear.

  5. Sounds like a very fruitful shopping trip....lol (oh that was bad, I'm sorry) I've never done much gardening but my dad always used to and when he used lime he used to put down in a circle around the plant.

  6. That sounds like my kind of shopping trip! Something tells me that blueberries may need ericaceous soil?

Have a great weekend. Jeanne x

  7. Thanks for the info Ann and Jeanne...I am beginning to think that I may have greatly damaged my blueberry plant with what everyone is telling me but I guess only time will tell.....oh well...I guess you learn from your mistakes!!!!

  8. Hi Tanya,
Oh the joys of finding things out !
Your Blueberry need to grow in close proximity to another Blueberry. This will aid pollination and ensure you get a good crop, Also, it's preferable to grow 2 varieties side by side. By this, I'm talking about a metre apart, as when they get growing, boy will they grow.
    Have fun

  10. Tracey...yes the loganberries sound great...think I will be getting some of them.

Gary Jen and Ruby...I think I know all of my failings with the blueberry bush now...the problem is I don't like them enough to want to bushes...I will see how thing's go and then go from there....being a novice can be so frustrating!!!!
