Weather watch Wednesday....week 16 2010...and asparagus help...PLEASE!!!

Well it hasn't been a totally bad week..the sun has shone nicely but the temperatures haven't been very warm with the winds that we have had. No rain again and soon if we don't get some they will be putting hose pipe bans in place before we even get them out. Although we've had no rain the soil is still moist underneath so I'm not worrying yet!!

Temps have been between 9-13 degrees by day. Last couple of evenings have given us a ground frost but nothing to upset what has already been planted!!

The sun has finally brought the blossoms out.

Now I would like a little advice. I have bought some Asparagus to plant ...it looks like a dead stick at the minute but apparently if I soak and then plant it then in a couple of years I will have some Asparagus to enjoy. I have already planted some on the plot but I was wondering if anyone knew whether it would do well placed in the greenhouse?? How much does it spread??? I know nothing about Asparagus apart from I love to eat it so I am really hoping you can help. Thanks!!

  1. Sorry I have only ever grown asparagus from berries to get some fern for cut flowers. I know nothing about growing it for eating.

I know what you are thinking - fancy growing it just to cut the fern but it it really isn't good enough to eat!

  2. Hi, I wish I could be of more help, but I know nothing about it either. I did a little searching and found something that may help...

  3. I'm not an asparagus fan so I can't help you out on that one. Not to mention I don't know a thing about growing anything either :) We've had good weather so far this week but last weekend was horrible. I hope it's the last of it.

  4. Sorry, I don't know anything about asparagus, so I can't help you there. It's been a lovely day here today, I've been out without my coat.

  5. We've been getting rain on a regular basis here. It keeps my hiking trails nice and muddy. The one good thing it does is make all the plants green. I hope you begin to get your share soon.

  6. I must admit I am starting to worry about rain here too - we have only had a little and have no water supply at our allotment so it is daily visits with filled milk bottles of water for our new plants.

  7. Hi Tanya,

Asparagus doesn't really spread. Each plant grows more shoots every year, but they'll be in a fairly dense clump and won't spread out further than the roots (take one of your plants and spread it out like a spider - that far). However, I don't really see any benefit to planting them in a greenhouse - they do just fine outdoors in the UK. As to whether it would prolong the season or anything... I'm not sure. Hope this helps, anyway.

  8. I wouldn't plant asparagus in the greenhouse I think that would be wasted greenhouse space, it will do much better outdoors.

Its funny what you said "they will be putting hose pipe bans in place before we even get them out" as i was thinking the exact same thing yesterday. My lawn is growing like a weeds so I agree about though it has been dry and relitively warm there is a lot of moisture under ground, for the time being.

I am seriously thinking about setting up my irrigation hoses though.
