Winter veg plug plant hunt.

Well as I said yesterday I went out this morning on a hunt for winter veg plants. It's been quite a productive day all round really.

I got my bike out early this morning and went into town and managed to get 7 trays of various varieties of cabbage, sprouting broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce......then Dave another plot owner also gave me some curly kale plug plants.

I got back from town and took the plants up the allotment then came home, did lunch for the kids and got the ironing done and finished off my third teddy bear.

I then biked down to the chippy to get tea ( that's right people...the chippy, Saturdays are my day off cooking!).

Got home and after eating and letting my tea settle I headed up the allotment to get the plug plants in the ground.

I got 74 planted out which I was very pleased with and the plot is now looking like it is supposed to again but I didn't get a photo of the finished lot as it was dark by the time I got home.

What I don't get is, on my seed packets it tells me to sow such seeds in like March/April time and then plant out in June/July time....if this is the case why can you but them now for planting out???

I think I am going to be a little more careful about when I sow things from now on and I am definitely going to be looking for succession sowing plants to give me longer crops...I hate the thought of there being no veg in the ground that I can go and pics and with having more land now I have been thinking of what I can sow more of next year when I will have all my land ready.

These are the plants I got off the market..£2.00 a tray which is more expensive than growing your own but better than nothing. There are 12 plants in each one and they are all very strong and healthy so for this year I will be happy with it!!

So do you all have your winter veg plants yet?? What are you planning to grow??? Is there anything I haven't mentioned which I could think about growing for next winter??

  1. I've done the same as you and bought some plug plants. I only bought a tray of savoy cabbage and spring greens though as I already have cavolo de nero, curly kale, chard and purple sprouting broccoli. My plugs were only £1 per tray with 12 plants in each so I got a bargain.

  2. Hi Tanya, thanks for stopping by my blog earlier. Any more beds I put in now will be left for over winter. I am not too keen on some of the winter Veg, but had raised some leeks earlier this year, over 50 in fact and all them have occupied one bed alone and should fair the winter well. Always a bit of a chance I believe some Christmas spuds, I will let you know how they get on 3 month from now and next to them I have some onion bulbs. I believe certain garlic are o.k. to put in October/November? Just a thought if you like garlic.

  3. More of less what we are putting in too. We will also be buying some over winter onion sets. These will be planted shortly and will bridge the gap between the summer harvested onions. We also put garlic in fairly early but start it off it pots so that is doesn't get too wet and rot off - our soil is very clayey

  4. I probably won't plant anything now until I put the garlic in. Although I might try overwintering some onion sets, and perhaps try some salad leaves of some sort in the greenhouse.

  7. Wow you were busy! I gave up on planting this year. We tried two years in a row and found out the walnut tree is killing our plants. It is the only good area for a garden in our little yard. I hope to be in a house with more than an acre before spring planting. Good luck with the winter crop!
