Apiarist...the keeper of bees. |
Yes...this is my big venture for 2013. I'm not doing this on a whim. It's something I have thought about for a while now and at the last committee meeting we had I was finally told that yes I could have the half a plot that nobody wanted as it is in such bad shape and I can put bees on it.
It will be a while before things get up and running, there is a lot to be sorted out, but I am very much looking forward to this new hobby.
How exciting - look forward to hearing about it and seeing a photo of you in bee keeper garb.
ReplyDeleteI thought so Sue...be a while before I get my stuff but I will be sure to put some pics up. I might even mange to save some money as I think I will need a child's suit..lol
DeleteNice to see you back, Tanya, I was wondering where you'd got to. How exciting, I know you've mentioned bees in the past, so I'm really pleased that you're getting to start a new hobby. Can't wait to hear all about it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good to be getting back into it. Yeah I have mentioned it in the past...take a lot of thought and planning though...very excited!!!
DeleteThar sounds fab -be sure to keep us all posted as to how it's going. My hub would love bees but not allowed on our plots, maybe something for the future.
ReplyDeleteHi Jobee, Will defintiely 'bee' keeping everyone posted on my journey. I am really looking forward to it. Pity you can't have bees on your allotments. They are so beneficial!!
DeleteYou must be so excited! Congratulations and good luck on your first beekeeping venture :) xx
ReplyDeleteVery excited Tanya...I have always wanted to do it but I think having shared your first experiences has given me a little more confidence to give it a go so thanks!!
DeleteIf I can do it you can...and seriously, if you have a beekeeping mentor you can probably get through anything your first year. My Mr. E rings me up every month now to make sure that I'm keeping an eye on my hives this winter :)
DeleteThanks for the confidence boost Tanya...I think at this stage I need it!!
DeleteGreat - Can't wait to hear about this escapade. Edinburgh Council have issued a policy on beekeeping on allotments - Basically you have to go on a course and get their approval for every aspect. So I've been rather put off, but I'm so excited that you have become a trail blazer. I've been hearing that urban bees are a lifeline for the collapsed commercial colonies in the countryside.
ReplyDeleteNo policies on our allotments Mal though I have signed up for a course as there is so much to learn and I figured this way I can meet some people who are already bee keepers too. Will be good to have someone to call up on in case of a crisis!!
DeleteI will let you all know how it's going every step of the way though it's going to be a while yet before I get my bees. A lot of work to be done on the land they hives are going to be on.
How exciting! I've thought about bees off and on over the years, but haven't taken the plunge. Take lots of pictures as you're getting set up please.
ReplyDeleteI will certainly take plenty of pictures as I start the long process of sorting the land and getting myself set up!! :-)
