Visiting an Open Apiary.

I told you a while back that as part of our course we were goig to get to see some hives first hand and it was a great experience and also a relief to find that a lot of bees didn't freak me out. Anyway whilst there I had my phone on me so kept snapping away and came home with a few good shots which I thought I would share with you all.

Feel free to stop looking through if you get bored before the end!!!

If you want a closer look at the pictures just click on the album to enlarge.

    1. Thanks icebear, considering the sun was hitting the screen and they were only taken on my phone I was quite impressed!!

  2. Bees are very interesting. I love all the pictures. I'd probably freak out too though without the big suits.

    1. I don't think I'd want to open up a hive without the suit on Ratty, even I'm not that brave!

  3. I bet your inspired by your course. Thanks for the clip and guess you were kitted out, too, and kept your hands safe as you snapped the process! (I guess the bees get drowsy anyway). Like the man with the army outfit! I'm thankful for bees and their contribution to the environment etc.

    1. Definitely Linda, I will tell you a bit about it in a future post.I certainly was kitted out. The bees don't get drowsy when you smoke them but they think that maybe their stores are in jeopardy so they will start to eat more in readiness for fleeing which initially makes them dopey as they are so full. Bees certainly are our friends, whether we like them or not!

  4. Why is one in camouflage gear? And one brave soul has no gloves on! Good job you didn't freak - can I see bees landing on suits?

    1. That's just his bee suit Sue, I guess you can get them in all sorts of colours, but the white are the most regular ones. I am glad I didn't freak, it would have been such a shame. The one with no gloves is Roy, he is a very seasoned bee keeper and will even go and collect swarms without a suit on ....personally I think he's mad..lol

  5. It's good when you can get some hands on experience and see things first hand, I'm sure it will help when you get your own bees.

    1. I really think it will Jo, just being able to get inside the hives and see what I a need to keep an eye out for as opposed to just being told about it and looking at pictures made everything so much clearer.
