Tuesday Tasters...Odourless Garlic

Well garlic isn't everyone's cup of tea...it really is one of those 'Marmite' foods.

However the problem with garlic is that for those who don't like it they may have to endure it from someone who does as the smell is very strong once eaten...but it doesn't have to be so here's how to make your garlic odourless!!

fresh garlic clove
Take your clove (or cloves) of garlic.

fresh peeled garlic clove
Peel as normal.

fresh peeled and halved garlic clove
Cut in half and locate the central growing tip ( I have used one here that has started to sprout so it was easy to see in the photo).

fresh, peeled and halved garlic clove with central tip removed to give odourless garlic
Take out the central tip from both sides and 'hey presto!'...odourless garlic!!

Now this is quite fiddly so don't expect it to be a quick thing. I haven't tried and tested this method as I don't mind the smell of garlic but I am assured that it does work. If you do decide to give this a go then I would love to know how well it works.

  1. well that's a great tip. I don't mind the smell of garlic unless it's extremely strong.

  2. Good tip. I like garlic. I don't think I've ever bought any myself though.

    1. Really Ratty, I add garlic to a lot of my food and like to make my own garlic and ginger butter too which is great for helping with colds.

  3. I've never heard of that before. My mum can't eat anything with even a hint of garlic in it as my dad goes mad with her, he can't stand the smell.

    1. Maybe it's something you should pass on to your Mum and she can try it out for us Jo?????

  4. I suppose you need an independent non eating garlic adjudicator as if we have both eaten garlic we don't notice it - it's only if one of us has been out and has had garlic in a meal - trouble is then we have no control over how the meal is prepared!

  5. I'm amazed by this tip...will definitely try it out. But then again, I quite like the smell of garlic and as long as I feed it to everyone dining with us then we have no complaints ;)

    1. I don't object to the smell of garlic either Tanya...though sometimes it's a little strong in the kitchen after slicing it I don't think this tip would help there. We are a garlic eating household so no complaints from all of us either!

  7. Thanks for this tip and sorry for the necro post. I found this page as I had heard about odourless garlic from my Father, I wondered how they could make such a thing and I have hopefully found the answer here! I did wonder if the studies regarding the healing properties are still true when the stem is removed as you have done, as apparently eating a clove twice a week is apparently able to reduce the chances of lung cancer by 44%.
A staggering result if true, but probably not ideal for talking face to face with anyone who isn't doing the same ;)
Here is the report I mentioned earlier for anyone who may be intrested... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/10228732/How-to-love-garlic-without-losing-friends.html
