Well to be honest I have no idea what grows and there was only one couple on the allotment this evening and they had no idea either so I'm hoping that maybe someone can help.
This was found growing behind the shed...where the firemen doused the fire there had been some earth washed down so I was digging out and piling back up when I encountered what I first thought to be just a weed...but then found this huge root at the end. Having no idea what it is I don't want to destroy it quite yet so if anyone can help I would be very grateful!!
It is white on the inside and has a delicte smell but I couldn't say of what.
On a sad note...whilst cleaning up behind the shed i found a hedgehog which had obviously been hibernating before the fire...i gave the poor little fella a proper burial.
On a brighter note...I have sown more runner beans, sweetcorn, and two varieties of basil...oh and I should get my purchases that i bought a fortnight ago and mentioned in an earlier post tomorrow...lots of money but I'm hoping it was well spent...still curious????

Poor hedgy, RIP.
ReplyDeleteI'm stumped re the mystery plant though.
Curious? Of course :) Too bad about the poor little hedgehog. No help from me on what that thing is. I'm famous for letting things grow in my flower beds until I figure out if they are a weed or a flower.
ReplyDeleteI'm absolutely no good with identifying plants unless they are obvious, so all I can do is wish you luck finding out. Too bad the poor little hedgehog didn't make it out of the fire.
ReplyDeleteErrh.. Turnip?? or radish family? Can't see too clear.
ReplyDeleteFeel so sorry about the hedgehog :(
Looks to me like a turnip or a rutabaga. Looking at the pictures in my seed catalog it could also be a beet, daikon or parsnip. Maybe even a sweet potato. I don't know, really, just throwing some ideas out there.
ReplyDeletePoor hedgie. :-(
Is it a parsnip? You should call it your 'jack pot plant' and see what it grows into.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't like to say what your mystery plant is. Poor hedgehog - hopefully it didn't know too much about it.
ReplyDeleteNo idea about your mystery root. Sorry about the little hedgehog, such a shame he didn't make it out of the fire. I'm curious about what you've bought, looking forward to reading about it.
ReplyDeleteI wonder about horseradish, they survive through a lot.Take a slice, it will be real strong.
ReplyDeletethanks for all the comments and suggestions....the pic isn't that great but I have trolled through some of the things you have come up with and so far I am going with sugar beet....it definitely isn't, horseradish, turnip, rutabaga, swede or parsnip...if anyone else has any ideas feel free to keep the comments coming!!
ReplyDeletePoor little hedgehog. I would have cried my eyes out
ReplyDeleteLet your root grow a bit so we can have a good look at the shape of the leaves.
You haven't thrown out any tropical potted plants last year, Tany?
ReplyDeleteYam? Eddo?
I think you might be onto something there Tanya, your suggestion of sugar beet made me think of another large root crop that is used mainly for animal feed but I think the flesh and root is more orangy but not for the life of me can I think of the name but I know it starts with 'M'.
ReplyDeleteAnyway I think your idea of sugar beet is a good one.
ok...verdict is in..we will let it grow and see what happens!!
ReplyDeleteOooh, I hoped you were going to do that!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be funny if it turned out to be horseradish!
nothing glorious on my fridge just this months bills to be paid..:)
